Examination of Jane Thorn Nov 22 1811
Dutchess County fs. The examination of Jane Thorn black
woman taken before us the 22 Nov 1811 – says she was
born at Flushing Long Island the slave of John Keys
and then was [given] to Joseph Thorn’s wife by her
grandfather – some time after she went to live
with Joseph Thorn in Poughkeepsie town her new
master – with whom she has lived about twenty
years. She says that in the year 1797 she was
manumitted by her master Thorn, and that she
has a paper from the poormasters of Poughkeepsie
town which on inspection reads thus
“We the subscribers Overseers of the Poor of the
Town of Poughkeepsie do certify that Jane a
black female slave aged about 30 years is
manumitted by the consent of Joseph Thorn her
master, by his request by writing in our pos-
-session which we have agreed to be in our
opinion lawful – given under our
hands the 2 december 1797

and wants some help from the town – she thinks
she could support herself if she has a home in which
