084-85 Road Book A – August 12, 1811

Peter Pells & Zephaniah Pells certificate of Overseers for Jude Pells
Whereas Peter Pells and Zephaniah Pells of Fishkill & Poughkeepsie Towns
yeoman has this day made application to us William Emott and
Thomas Nelson overseers of the poor of the town of Poughkeepsie in the coun-
ty of Dutchess and state of New York in order to obtain a certificate
immediately before the manumission of their female black slave Jude
Pells said to be 28 years of age Agreeable to an act of the Legislature of
the said state concerning slaves and servants. We the said overseers having
examined the said slave Jude Pells do heeby certify that she appears to
us to be under the age of fifty years and of sufficient ability to provide for
herself. given under our hands at Poughkeepsie the twelfth day of
June in the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven

Peter Pells and Zephaniah Pells
Manumission of Jude

Know all men by these presents that we Peter Pells and
Zephaniah Pells of the Towns of Fishkill and Poughkeepsie
yeomen in the county of Dutchess and state of New York do here
by declare and certify that we jointly and severally have this day
set free and manumitted our slave Jude Pells a black female
slave said to be about twenty eight years of age agreeable to
an act of the Legislature of the state concerning slaves and
servants – And we do hereby for ourselves as above fully and
freely renounce all right of property that we or either of us hereto-
fore had in the said Jude Pells and do forever release her from
all servitude or dependance on us or either of us as a slave to us
or any person claiming under us as aforesaid and we do declare
her to be a free woman by these presents given under our hands
and seals at Poughkeepsie the twenty fifth day of June in
the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven
