Whereas Jane Van Ness late of the
said Town of Poughkeepsie deceased by her last will and
Testament in the month of November ^now last past did Manu
mit her male slave named Andries from and after her
decease, and did order and direct that her executors should
pefect and complete the said manumission as soon as
convenient after her decease and whereas it is necess
ary for the indemnity + Exoneration of the heirs of the said Jane
Van Ness that the Overseers of the poor should give a
Certificate stating that it appears to them that the said
Andries is under the age of Forty five years and is
of sufficient ability to provide for himself Therefore
We James Wilson and Robert Noxon overseers of the
Poor for the said Town of Poughkeepsie Do hereby
Certify that we have examined into the age & Situation
of the said Andries and are fully satisfied that he is
under forty five years of age and of sufficient ability
to provide for himself and do order and direct the
Town Clerk to Register this Certificate as the law
directs February 8th one thousand eight hundred and
fifteen

do hereby declare and make known that the within
named Andries is manumitted and made a free
citizen agreeably to the last will and Testament of
the above named Jane Van Ness and the laws of the
State of New York witness our hands this 8th day of
February one thousand eight hundred and fifteen
