061 Road Book A – April 19, 1804

Whereas James Dearin of the town of Poughkeepsie in the County of
Dutchess and State of New York farmer has made application to us
William Emott and Thomas Nelson overseers of the poor in the
town of poughkeepsie in the county and state aforesaid in
order to obtain a certificate to manumit his slave Nanny
Dearing a woman of colour aged forty five years or thereabouts
agreeable to an act intitled and act concerning slaves & servants
passed the 8th day of April 1801 – We the said overseers in on
mature deliberation do hereby certify that the above named slave
Nanny Dearin appears to be under the age of Fifty years and
of sufficient ability to provide for herself. Given under our
hands the tenth day of April in the year one thousand Eight
hundred and four

I James Dearin of the town of poughkeepsie in the County of
Dutchess and State of New York Do hereby certify and make
known that acording and in pursuance of the statute of the
state of New York Entitled and act concerning slaves and
servants pased the Eight of April 1801 I do from henceforth
set at Liberty free and mannumit a certain Negro Wench
named Nanny Dearin who was Born some time in the
fall of seventeen hundred and fifty nine she being my slave
and I do hereby Fully and freely acquit release and discharge
her from all and Every kind of servitude to me
or any of my Representatives in Witness Whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth Day of
April one thousand Eight hundred and four
