070 Road Book A – June 4, 1807

Know all men by these presents that I James Dearin
of the Town of Poughkeepsie in the county of Dutchess and State of
New York, do hereby certify and make known, That I have
this day set free and Manuitted my man slave a Negro who
has adopted the name of Benjamin James, supposed to be twenty
six years of age agreeable to an Act of the State of New York
concerning slaves and servants, And do hereby for myself &
my legal representation, and evry of them absolutely fully &
freely renounce all right of property that I heretofore had
in the siad Benjamin James, And do forever acquit release
and discharge him from all kind of servitude or dependance
as a slave to me or any other person who may hereafter claim
under me, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand
and seal at Poughkeepsie, the fourth day of June in the
year one thousand eight hundred and seven–

Whereas James Dearin of the town of Poughkeepsie
in the county of Dutchess and state of New York has
made application to us William Emott and Thomas Nelson,
overseers of the Poor of the said Town, In order to
obtain a certificate immediately before the
Manumission of his slave Benjamin
James, a negro man supposed to be about 26 years of Age,
Agreeable to a statute of the state of New York concerning
slaves and servants, We the said Overseers having examined
the before named Slave Benjamin, do hereby certify that he
appears to be under the age of fifty years and of sufficient
abilityt o provide for himself — Given under our hands
at Poughkeepsue the fourth day of June one thousand eight
hundred and seven
