Know all men by these presents, that I James Emott
of Poughkeepsie in the County of Dutchess, do hereby
manumit and make free, my Negro woman slave
named Betty, and wholly release and discharge her
from all further servitude to me or my representa-
tives, —

Memorandum, that on the eleventh day of December
in the year one thousand eight hundred and seven,
and at the time of signing & sealing of the above
manumission, We Thomas Nelson and William
Emott, the Overseers of the Poor for the Town of
Poughkeepsie, the place of residence of the above named
James Emott, at the request of the said James, do
certify, that it appears to us, that ^the Negro woman
slave Betty as aforesaid Manumitted, is under
the age of fifty year, and of sufficient ability to
provide for herself–
