Articles of agreement made and concluded on between Joseph Scott of the Town of Kinderhook, County of Columbia, and State of New York, and James his Negro Slave as follows, to wit, I, the said Joseph Scott for myself, my heirs, Executors, and Administrators, do hereby Covenant promise & Agree to and with James my slave aforesaid, that in case he the said james, shall well & faithfully serve James Sleght Esq.r as a servant at all Lawfull service, for the Term of Six months and an half, after the date hereof, and shall like= -wise by the hands of the said James Sleght Esq.r or his agent, pay me the sum of forty Dollars current money of the state aforesaid, That then and upon his the slaves performing, and faithfully fulfilling the above promises and conditions, I do hereby pronounce him the said James a free man, and entirely clear of all demands I hold against him, for myself, my heirs, Executors, and Administrators forever, Signed Sealed and delivered this seventeenth day of february in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred & seven — 1807 — Joseph Scott In witness of S DeRiemer James Sleght
