081-82 Road Book A – December 4, 1810

Whereas James Westervelt of the town of Poughkeepsie
in the county of Dutchess and state of New York, farmer
has made application to us William Emott and
Thomas Nelson overseers of the poor of the said town
in order to obtain a certificate immediately before the
manumission of his Negro slave Harry Foote
said to be about thirty five years of age, agreeably
to the statute of the above named state concerning
servants and slaves — We the said overseers having
examined the before named slave Harry Foote
do hereby certify that he appears to us to be under
the age of fifty years, and of sufficient ability
to provide for himself — Given under our hands
at Poughkeepsie the fourth day of December in the
year one thousand eight hundred + ten —

To All whom it may concern be it known
that I James Westervelt of the town of Poughkeepsie
in the County of Dutchess and state of New York
farmer, do hereby make known that I have
this day set free and manumitted my negro man
slave Harry Foote said to be about thirty five
years of age, agreeably to the statute of this state
concerning servants and slaves. And I do hereby
for myself my heirs, executors + administrators + assigns
fully renounce all right of property in the said Harry
Foote claimed by me or any other person under me, And
do declare him a free inhabitant of this state, free
of all dependance on me as a slave — In witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hand + seal at
Poughkeepsie the fourth day of December in the year
one thousand eight hundred and ten
