098 Road Book A – September 25, 1817

To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting Know ye
that we James Emott and Elizabeth Baker administrators of all
and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits which
were of Valentine Baker deceased, have manumitted and set
free and by these presents do manumit and set free, a female
slave named Jane or Jin, belonging to the estate of said Valentine
Baker deceased. In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands
and seals this tenth day of January in the year one thousand
eight hundred and seventeen

We Robert Noxon and John Nelson overseers of the poor of the town
of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County do certify that we have
examined the said female slave named Jane or Jin in the
above manumission mentioned, and that she appears to us to
be under the age of forty five years and of sufficient ability
to provide for herself — Witness our hands this tenth day of
January in the year One thousand eight hundred and
seventeen
